“King Tut” Johnson

Motivational Speaker and Author

About

Walter "King Tut" Johnson is a nationally recognized author, keynote speaker, criminal justice reform advocate, certified recovery coach, and Director of Champions for Change Inc.

After serving 28 years in federal prison under five life sentences, Walter returned home committed to helping others avoid the mistakes that cost him decades of freedom. Today he inspires audiences across the country with a message centered on accountability, redemption, and personal responsibility.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Walter became known on the streets as "King Tut." While he has never hidden his criminal past, he has consistently spoken openly about the choices that led to prison and the work required to rebuild a meaningful life.

For more than three decades, Walter has also been connected in public discussion to the 1994 Quad Recording Studios robbery involving Tupac Shakur. Walter has consistently and emphatically denied any involvement in that crime. Although he acknowledges his reputation at the time as a notorious stick-up man, he maintains that he was not responsible for the robbery. The allegation spread widely after lyrics by Tupac Shakur fueled public speculation. Walter addresses this chapter directly in his latest book, encouraging readers to look beyond rumors and embrace truth, accountability, and redemption.

Walter's rehabilitation led U.S. District Judge Frederic Block—the same judge who imposed his sentence to later grant him compassionate release after recognizing his extraordinary transformation.

Walter has appeared on MSNBC, Morning Joe, CBS News, NPR, The New York Times, AM970's Arthur Aidala Power Hour, and numerous television, radio, podcast, and digital media platforms discussing criminal justice reform and successful reentry.

He has spoken for The Legal Aid Society, Proskauer Rose LLP, CASES, Passages Academy, universities, community organizations, recovery programs, faith-based institutions, corporations, and criminal justice reform events.

His latest book, Second Chance First Responsibility: How I Rebuilt My Life Inside and Out of Prison, is a memoir, inspirational guide, workbook, and reentry blueprint that provides practical tools for anyone determined to evolve, reinvent themselves, and build a life rooted in responsibility.

Walter's message is simple: Your past may explain you but it does not have to define you. Real freedom begins with responsibility.
